I woke up this morning able to type by touch.
I am a digital native but touch typing one really just clicked for. And I wasn’t even trying, I just realised this morning that I’d been typing without my usual intermittent downward glance.
I remember at school – in the wonderfully ??? sounding ’computer class’ – several hours, spread over several weeks were dedicated to learning how to touch type. Every pupil was given a cloth to cover their hands and the keyboard and, in varying levels of distress, we all inched our way through typing out that marvelous pangram:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
I recall the boys struggling far more, and ostentatiously throwing in the
towel vowel so as to avoid further bruising their eight year old egos.
Besides, our teacher couldn’t touch type, why should we.
