Trust doesn’t scale. We’ve pushed trust to breaking point and beyond. Trust on the web, where did it go? Trust is community.

The early web had trust in spades, trust is easier when there is very little at stake. Trust is slow, organic. Trust doesn’t scale to millions, trust doesn’t even scale to thousands.

I don’t think it’s too dramatic to say that we’ve moved from a web-of-trust to a web-of-lies, from expressing ourselves to selling ourselves, from sharing our interests to promoting products. Silicon Valley likes to think that trust is a problem to which a technical solution can be found, if only all our traffic was TLS encrypted…

But it isn’t, trust is about relationships not certificates.
